Edwards and Gary O'Neil represent the early names in the frame to replace the former manager as head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The previous coach was dismissed on Sunday after the team's ten-game winless beginning to the top-flight campaign.
And Edwards and O'Neil - both of who have previous links to the club - are among the names to be considered by the Wolves ownership.
The manager is presently at Middlesbrough, which would pose a potential hurdle to his appointment at Molineux.
However the ex- Luton Town head coach - who made over a century of appearances for Wolves during his time as a player - is said to be a leading contender for the vacancy.
The mid-career manager is said to have support from the Wolves directors as they begin the search of appointing a new manager.
O'Neil is also appearing as a unexpected contender, even though he would be a shock appointment considering he was released by the club in the previous winter.
The former West Ham United midfielder is out of work meaning Wolves would not need to pay any compensation.
