Celebratory Displays and a Toast for Life: Israeli Citizens Rejoice over Deal Bringing Back Hostages
The declaration of an agreement projected to lead to the freeing captives detained in the Gaza Strip for over 24 months has generated joy and comfort throughout the nation.
An organization that has advocated for the release of Israeli hostages in Gaza expressed “profound gratitude” for what it termed an “historic breakthrough”.
The deal—still requiring agreed upon Israel’s war cabinet—involves the release of 20 living hostages as well as the remains of 28 deceased captives in exchange for 250 Palestinian detainees imprisoned for life in Israeli jails plus 1,700 individuals from Gaza.
So far, 148 captives have come back—most as part of earlier truce agreements—51 bodies have been recovered while eight hostages have been rescued.
Celebratory Moments at Hostages Square
Jubilant scenes have unfolded in Hostages’ Square located in Tel Aviv as hundreds of people assembled ahead of the agreement’s signing.
The gathering started applauding and dancing beneath US and Israeli flags—a female attendee displaying a placard saying: “We love Trump.”
“This is a wondrous day,” she expressed.
A different person, 50-year-old Yael, wept while observing the people celebrating.
“I’m very excited—it is such a comfort,” she said. “We must witness them come back home to their families.”

Families Celebrate Using Pyrotechnics
The mom and sibling of a captive Israeli Matan Zangauker set off fireworks to mark the news of his impending returned home.
“They are returning!... Matan is on his way home!” Einav Zangauker exclaimed while holding her child.
Viki Cohen, the parent of captive Israeli Nimrod Cohen, posted on social media: “My son, you are returning home.”
The joy was palpable in the streets of Tel Aviv following the announcement.
Released Captives Say Prayers and Toasts
Ex-captive of British-Israeli origin Emily Damari celebrated alongside another released captive Romi Gonen, reciting prayers of gratitude, then toasting “L’chaim”, meaning “for life”. She has advocated for the freedom of her friends, the Berman twins Gali and Ziv.
Their sibling Liran Berman posted: “My Gali and Ziv, I love you so much. You’re coming home.”
Gil Dickman’s cousin Carmel Gat was taken hostage in October 2023, with her remains found in a tunnel in Gaza nearly a year after. He has been joining other hostage families in pushing for a deal which ensures the homecoming of all those still being held within Gaza.
“I can’t quite believe this is actually happening. We have waited for so long and here it is,” he expressed.
He said he was “broken” that his cousin would not be among those coming back home but was “glowing with joy” for the families of the hostages who are at last returning.
Eitan Horn was seized from kibbutz Nir Oz in Israel’s south along with his brother.
Cautious Optimism from Relatives
Dalia Cusnir, whose brother-in-law Eitan Horn remains captive in Gaza, remarked she felt as if she were in “in a dream”.
“We’re more than grateful to President Trump and everything he has accomplished on our behalf. It seems like it might be the start of the conclusion of this ordeal, and hugging Eitan seems nearer than before,” she said.
However, she warned that it was still too early to celebrate.
“Before the final captive is here, we’re not opening the bubbly. We will continue struggling... until it’s over,” she said.
“So many things might occur until the last moment which is why we’re being so, so careful. We simply wish to thank everyone who was involved in the efforts and ensure this deal is finalized... We will celebrate only when we have the last hostage safely home.”
Eitan was taken from kibbutz Nir Oz in southern Israel along with his brother Iair, who was released from detainment in a ceasefire deal earlier this year.
