‘All those little things – make sure you do them’: Guruzeta’s road from rehabilitation to success with Athletic

The debut appearance the Spanish forward featured in England, an young playing for the reserve team against Borussia Mönchengladbach Under-23s at Adams Park in the 2015 season, he scored. The second time he took the field in England, against the Black Cats following that, he netted. His third outing, against Manchester City soon after, indeed, he did it once more. As he revisited to Manchester to play against the Red Devils at the sports complex in that year, he did it once more. It was a superb volley, also. “Truly,” he states, “it’s one of the best goals in my career.” Thus the club did what they had to do: they took him off.

“I was furious,” the attacker says, before breaking into laughter. “Probably there’s a recording. We traveled to face United and I was in fine form. I wasn’t allowed to feature the latter period: I hadn’t yet signed deal, I was scoring goals, many stories circulated, as you’d expect. I’m unsure regarding the Magpies’ pursuit, but I came across reports about the Red Devils, the usual talk. I have no idea how true it was, but even if they had called, my desire was to remain at Bilbao. It’s a privilege.”

Real Sociedad release pressure with surreal victory in Basque derby like no other

At the facility, the city, the morning session is set to begin; post-session, the quick travel to Loiu and a further journey to Britain, this time to face Newcastle in the European elite competition on Wednesday. Mentioning that phrase brings a smile to his face. It has become a challenging campaign for the team, due in part to the requirements of their participation. Defeated late on in the weekend clash, they have secured just a single victory of their last eight matches and been defeated by Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund in Europe. However, consider the broader view, the big nights he has lived and those that lie ahead, and he feels a calm gratitude within him.

In the three years since he had rejoined the team, Guruzeta has been a semi-final participant, denied at the last hurdle a domestic final by the English giants, and has boarded a decades-old barge through the waterway flanked by a huge crowd after lifting the trophy, the club’s first trophy in four decades. Now he is Athletic’s top scorer in the UCL, where they are distinctive and returning after absence in a long period. “This was beyond my dreams,” he states.

The player believed it difficult enough just to break into the senior squad and he was right. Born to the one-time rival player Xabi Guruzeta and a season ticket holder at the opposition side, Gorka is a graduate of Antiguoko, the San Sebastián club that produced the Arsenal manager, the former star and Andoni Iraola. He signed for Athletic at seventeen but after making his senior debut in the 2018 season, he went through a torn cruciate, dropped, a demotion and a recall before he could truly get a chance, making his comeback to live the best days of his career.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta aims to take on Newcastle in the UCL.

“Entering the youth system doubting you’ll make the top level but with every stage you progress through you’re still there and you can see it getting closer. You arrive and then … departure is necessary.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in a handful of matches between his bow and February 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Several appearances with them and I tear my cruciate.

“A massive setback but I reflect on it as a turning point because it made me change the outlook. Healing from a serious ailment is difficult, but it aids growth. You cultivate routines new to you. It’s not about neglect, but I attended practice and then return home, like when you’re a kid. In the facility, you have everything, so take full advantage. Training, prehab. Get in the gym. With hip imbalance, work on that. With decent ankle function, enhance it further. All the minor details: perform them.

“At the top level you’re going to face physical challenges who have experienced contact countless occasions. Highly robust. I look at photos of me before: I had slender legs. Injuries are inevitable. Current photos and the improvement is clear. Recovery revealed that. Sessions end, but additional work remains. Peers are prepared, really ready; the same applies.”

Game time is essential. He left upset in that year, at 23 years old, moving to a lower level. At Sabadell in the 20-21 campaign, he scored three times in numerous matches. At Amorebieta in the second half of 2021-22, the scoring picked up. “Many experience this: transfers, releases. Should you reverse it, effort, faith, and if one day the requirement appears in your position, they might come back for you. Preparation is key. Upon the recall, a fantasy realized. To then win the Copa del Rey, play in Europe, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”

Understandably he remarks this is to be enjoyed. Especially after the previous season which, on occasions, was involved suffering. After being leading scorer with sixteen goals, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
